DEBATE SPEECH : SOCIAL MEDIA AS A MEANS OF COMMUNICATION HAS DONE MORE HARM THAN GOOD

Mr. Chairman, Panel of Judges, Accurate Timekeeper, Co-debaters, Ladies and Gentlemen,

Good day. I stand before you as the Chief Speaker against the motion which states that “Social Media as a Means of Communication has Done More Harm than Good.”

Social media, as we all know, refers to platforms like Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter (now X), Instagram, TikTok and others that have revolutionized how we interact, communicate, and connect with people across the globe. While I agree that there are some challenges associated with social media, it would be highly unfair to ignore its overwhelming benefits. Let me show you why the good it brings far outweighs the harm.

Firstly, social media has bridged the communication gap across distances. Gone are the days when people had to wait for weeks or months to get letters from loved ones. Today, with a single tap on WhatsApp or Messenger, you can reach someone across the world in seconds. It has enabled families to stay in touch, long-lost friends to reconnect, and professionals to collaborate across countries. In emergencies, social media has become a lifeline for quick communication and coordination.

Secondly, social media has become a powerful tool for education and enlightenment. Students and teachers now have easy access to videos, tutorials, and discussions through platforms like YouTube, Telegram groups, and educational Facebook pages. During the COVID-19 pandemic, for instance, social media served as a vital educational tool when schools were shut down. Without it, many students would have lost an entire year of learning.

Thirdly, social media empowers people to speak up. Through platforms like Twitter and TikTok, individuals can voice their opinions and advocate for social change. Campaigns such as #BlackLivesMatter, #EndSARS, and #MeToo gained worldwide attention, not through traditional media, but through social media. It has given a voice to the voiceless and helped correct many injustices.

Fourthly, social media promotes entrepreneurship and job creation. Small businesses and young entrepreneurs use Instagram, Facebook, and TikTok to showcase their products, attract customers, and grow their brands. Many people today earn a living as influencers, digital marketers, content creators, and online business owners, all thanks to social media.

Now, to the concerns about harm. Yes, social media can be addictive, and sometimes misinformation spreads. However, should we blame the tool or the user? Fire can cook food or burn a house, it depends on how it’s used. What we need is digital literacy and responsible use, not the condemnation of the entire platform.

In conclusion, Mr. Chairman, ladies and gentlemen, social media has transformed communication for the better. It connects people, educates, empowers voices, and drives economic progress. Instead of focusing on the few negatives, let us embrace and improve this powerful tool. I strongly oppose the motion that social media has done more harm than good.

Thank you.

Social Media as a Means of Communication has Done More Harm than Good

Title: Social Media Has Done More Harm than Good

Good day Mr. Chairman, Panel of Judges, Accurate Timekeeper, Co-debaters, and the ever-attentive audience.

I am Femi Tanko, the chief speaker supporting the motion that Social Media as a Means of Communication has done more harm than good. I stand before you today to explain why this modern tool, though innovative, has caused more damage than benefits to individuals and society at large.

Firstly, social media has become a breeding ground for misinformation and fake news. Anyone can post anything without verification, and before you know it, false information spreads like wildfire. This has caused panic, damaged reputations, and even led to violence and unrest in some cases.

Secondly, social media is a major cause of poor academic performance among students. Rather than focusing on their studies, many young people spend countless hours chatting, watching videos, and scrolling through endless posts. This addiction affects their concentration and overall productivity, leading to low grades and poor academic achievements.

Thirdly, social media promotes cyberbullying and harassment. Many individuals, especially teenagers, have become victims of online bullying, hate speech, and blackmail. Some even fall into depression or commit suicide due to constant online abuse. This is not only harmful but dangerous to mental health.

Another dangerous impact is the breakdown of real human relationships. People now prefer to chat online rather than have face-to-face conversations. This has weakened family bonds, reduced social skills, and made people emotionally distant. How can a means of communication be useful when it destroys real communication?

Furthermore, social media has become a platform for immoral content and fraudulent activities. Scammers, fraudsters, and ritualists now use it to lure unsuspecting victims. Children are exposed to adult content, nudity, and inappropriate behavior that corrupts their minds and ruins their values.

Ladies and gentlemen, while I admit that social media has some benefits like fast communication and business promotion, these are overshadowed by the harm it has done. What is the value of speed if what spreads is falsehood and destruction?

In conclusion, social media has indeed done more harm than good. It is high time we controlled its use before it completely ruins our society.

Thank you.
